Many of you ask me this question.
“Where are Hokkaido’s hidden gem spots?”
I have a love-and-hate relationship with this question. While I want you to discover every part of Hokkaido, the real hidden gems are difficult to get to and won’t fit in most of your itineraries.
But today, I will share some of them with you. They tend to be remote, but if you’re an adventurous soul seeking off-the-beaten paths, here’s for you!
1. Rishiri Island
Rishiri Island is part of the Rishiri-Rebun-Sarobetsu National Park, featuring stunning beaches, rugged cliffs, and lush forests. Explore fishing villages, ancient shrines, and local hot springs. Rishiri’s natural beauty and unique charm make it an unforgettable destination for nature lovers and those seeking a peaceful getaway.
How to Get There: Fly from New Chitose or Sapporo Okadama Airport to Rishiri Airport (50 minutes) or take a ferry from Wakkanai to Oshidomari Port (1 hour 40 minutes).
Things to Do:
- Hike Mount Rishiri: A challenging yet rewarding 10-hour round trip hike with panoramic views.
- Visit Himenuma and Otatomari Swamps: Enjoy serene reflections and local snacks.
- Relax at local hot springs: Unwind in mineral-rich waters with stunning views.
2. Rebun Island
Known as the “Island of Flowers,” Rebun Island is filled with vibrant alpine wildflowers and lush green landscapes. Enjoy coastal cliffs, charming beaches, and blue waters. Indulge in delicious seafood - sea urchin is a must-eat!
How to Get There: Take a ferry from Wakkanai to Kafuka Port (2 hours) or a ferry from Rishiri’s Oshidomari Port (45 minutes).

- Hike the Rebun Flower Trail: Explore diverse wildflowers with various hiking routes.
- Explore Cape Sukoton: Enjoy stunning cliffs and ocean views.
- Visit the Momoiwa Observatory: Admire iconic “Peach Rock” and breathtaking scenery.
3. Rausu
Located on the Shiretoko Peninsula, Rausu offers pristine beauty and diverse wildlife. Famous for whale and dolphin watching, this town is a great destination for nature enthusiasts and seafood lovers.
How to Get There: Drive from Memanbetsu Airport (3 hours) or take a bus from Utoro (1 hour) or Kushiro (4 hours).

- Whale and dolphin watching: Join guided boat tours for an unforgettable experience.
- Hike to Lake Rausu: Explore Shiretoko National Park’s largest lake.
- Relax at Rausu Onsen
4. Shakotan Peninsula
The Shakotan Peninsula boasts rugged cliffs, crystal-clear waters, and abundant marine life. Enjoy stunning panoramic views and high-quality seafood, especially sea urchin and abalone.
How to Get There: Drive from Sapporo (1.5 hours) or take a train to JR Otaru Station and a bus to Shakotan (1.5 hours).

- Explore the Shimamui Coast: Enjoy panoramic views and access the hidden Shimamui Beach.

5. Akkeshi
Akkeshi is known for its diverse wildlife and delicious oysters. Enjoy beautiful coastlines, lush forests, and tranquil lakes in this serene coastal town.
How to Get There: Take the JR Senmo Main Line from Kushiro to Akkeshi Station (50 minutes) or drive from Kushiro (40 minutes).

- Discover Ayamegahara Nature Reserve: Explore diverse plant and flower species.
- Visit Cape Aikappu: Enjoy panoramic views of the coastline and Akkeshi Bay.
- Treat Yourself to Akkeshi Oysters: Savor some of Japan’s best oysters.
