Insider tips to avoid tourist crowds

Hi Hokkaido travelers,

A big problem of tourism in Japan now is...

Overtourism.

Japan has been experiencing a huge upsurge of foreign visitors since post-COVID. Popular destinations like Kyoto and Mount Fuji are swamped beyond their capacities.

You don’t want to contribute to such a problem, right? Let’s go off the beaten path.

So, I asked a friend of mine from Furano, probably the most touristy area in Hokkaido.

“Where are local people’s favorite spots that many tourists don’t know?”

Here is what she shared.

BUT,

before diving in… These places are truly special for local communities and remain relatively untouched by mass tourism. Please respect local guidelines and help us preserve the environment if you go to these spots.

⛰️ Fukiage onsen

This is a public outdoor onsen surrounded by forests. There’s no reception (hence free admission), no changing room, and no separation between men and women. This truly natural onsen is there for you to just relax in nature. A perfect hideaway when you get tired of touristy vibes in the famous Blue Pond and Shirahige Waterfall. It’s just 10 min drive from the waterfall!

🌲 Torinuma Park

Close from central Furano yet unknown to many people. This park is known for its clear-water pond, called Torinuma. The water is constantly springing from underground and makes a super clear surface that reflects the surrounding trees - an amazing view with autumn colors. Free boats are available for you to ride on and enjoy watching fish in the pond.

🛶 Lake Kanayama

In the south of Furano, Lake Kanayama offers lots of outdoor activities that local people enjoy; camping, swimming, canoeing, onsen, etc… In summer, the lakeside lavender field is the best spot to enjoy a beautiful scenery in calmness, away from the touristy flower parks packed with people.
