An island you’ve never heard of

Hi Hokkaido travelers,

Hi Hokkaido travelers,

A few weeks back, I talked about 5 hidden gem destinations of Hokkaido, and many of you liked it.

So today, I’m going to take you to an island that’s even more hidden. You probably never heard of it.

Teuri Island.

My parents visited there recently and they loved the untouched nature there. It’s a small island of just 12 km around, with only 250 people living there.

No supermarket, no 7-Eleven. But a few small inns and local restaurants will welcome you, many of which are family-run.

And what’s more special about Teuri? This island is home to one million seabirds every summer. Many rare birds, including endangered species, fly to Teuri to nest and hatch their babies.

If you’re looking for untouched nature and the bustling energy of life, here they have.

🌳Things to do

  • Bird watching cruise - The best way to watch wild seabirds nesting on cliffs from the sea. Join guided tours that depart in the early morning. The peak for bird nesting is from May to July.
  • Fresh local seafood - There are a few restaurants run by local fishermen and they serve their fresh catches. The island’s specialty, sea urchin is best from late June to early September.
  • Cycling around the island - It’ll take only 2 hours to bike around the island. You rarely see cars on the road, so enjoy the beautiful scenery at your own pace. Rental bicycles are available at the ferry terminal.
  • Walk in nature - Enjoy well-maintained walking rails in forests while listening to birdsong

⛴️Getting there

From Sapporo, take a limited express train to Haboro for 3 hours, change to a bus to a ferry terminal, and take a ferry to Teuri Island for 1-1.5 hours.
